Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Vodder Technique)
Note: We are not taking on any new patients for this service at this time.
Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual technique used to assist lymph flow and aid in the drainage of tissues. It uses specific direction, pressure, stretch, and rhythmical movements to encourage lymphatic drainage from the affected connective tissues back towards the heart. It also works on the parasympathetic nervous system and can have sedating and immunomodulating effects. This method is based on strong, scientific physiological principles and was developed in France in 1932 by Emil and Estrid Vodder. Today it has become the most well-known technique to aid in lymphatic drainage and edema (swelling).
MLD can be used to treat a variety of issues and is most commonly used as the main treatment protocol along with combined decongestive therapy (CDT) for primary and secondary lymphedemas. Primary lymphedemas are typically genetic or congenital and are due to a malfunctioning lymphatic system. Secondary lymphedemas (the most common lymphedema) can result from lymph node removal/dissection, radiation, surgery (such as a mastectomy), obesity and/or trauma to the lymphatic system.
MLD can also help treat the following:
- Lipo-lymphedema
- Traumatic edema
- Pre-operative care
- Post-surgical edema
- Rheumatic diseases
- Pregnancy-related swelling
- Chronic Sinusitis
- Migraines
- Whiplash
- Anxiety, stress and burn-out syndromes
- Bruising
- Fractures, strains, and sprains
